Ou Est Le Ping is an honest, short and sweet little book about real people living the dream of a house in Gascony in France.
It is unnerving to find that most of the things we did and still do when visiting our own pile of rubble in France are mirrored in this book. From visiting the house in various seasons, to taking different routes getting there, the French lessons, even doing the same tasks in our garden and house. The one major difference though is that we haven't been accepted by the "friendly" French neighbours. For a pair of South Africans settling into France, we take great delight in watching the shenanigins of the Brit expats who are every bit as colourful and conniving as the French.

Although well-intentioned, the book disappoints. The immature style reads more like "What I did in my summer holidays" and throws little light on Gascony or the Gascon way of life - it lacks verve and detail, and as a result is rather pedestrian and colourless.
