4.0 out of 5 stars Old shipmates will enjoy these recollections., 8 April 2002
By Chris Fellows (LEICESTER, Leicestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I served aboard the Tiger in 1972/3, and sentimentally this book is a 'ship's log' of the times and the places we visited. It methodically chronicles the dates and events which we young sailors were not so concerned about at the time as we were at having the time of our lives (this is pre-Falklands war)travelling the World, and being paid for it. It covers all three cruisers in great detail, and a nice feature is the way it breaks down each individual trip the ships made by date. It is easy to recognise 'one's own bit' and remember old friends. Of course mine is a purely selfish point of view, and the book does not make light of the honours these ships earned in wartime, and the poor lads who lost their lives. It is a history book, and as such loses a little in the dryness of the telling. I remember things that happenned 'below decks' because I was part of it and I can 'colour in ' the little bits that are dismissed in the book in one sentence. For instance, in the chapter about the salvaging of the MV Carnation by the Tiger in 1973 no mention is made of the fact that every single member of the ship's company received a proportionate share of the salvage money many years after the event when a lot, including myself, were back in 'civvy street'. It wasn't a fortune, but when you consider all I did was watch from the guardrail it made me realise that 'they also serve who only stand and wait'. I enjoyed my time on the old Tiger, and I'm sure any of you out there who remember her, and her sisters will enjoy this sail down memory creek.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive non-techical histrory of the last British cruiser, 5 Nov 2000
A non-techical review of these fine ships. The majority of the text describes the activities of the three ships during their careers. What I felt it missed was more about the ships themselves and how they fitted into the Navy of the time. Plently of good quality pictures but sadly no layout drawings.
