4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insights, 18 Nov 2006

If you are involved in church choirs you'll know there is very little written about the history of choirs. This excellent reprint of a 1922 book isn't as stuffy as you might thing and gives a great picture of the way music was provided in English churches (particularly in Sussex, but don't worry too much if you aren't from round there), from the end of the 17th century to the 19th century.

It covers both singers and instruments, while music focusses mainly on hymns and psalms (it would have been good to hear more about the anthems that are refered to but never identified).

Generally well presented, with a bonus of a CD of traditional Sussex carols in the book. Rather a lot of typos, but otherwise a great book if you are interested in the English choral tradition.
