Product Description

From the Author

The book originated as a training manual for the groups that Kate ( my High Priestess at that time) and I conducted. It was suggested that we published the work as at that time there was no up to date down to earth work available on the general market. There were several errors which could not be corrected before the work went to print. It was not designed to take the place of any previously published work on the history of the Craft. It tends to draw more to the practical than the academic and shows more what to do than the history behind it. It remains down to earth in its approach to the Craft.

4.0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense introduction, 15 May 2003
By N. Clarke (Lancs, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
While perhaps not as polished as some of the author's later works, this is a useful, practical guide to the Craft from an extremely knowledgeable and respected High Priestess. West is about as far from fluffy bunny Wicca as it is possible to be, and _Born In Albion_ amply reflects this. She cuts through both jargon-Wicca and dumbed-down-Wicca to provide an introduction that is both sensible and practical, and a worthy addition to any witch's library. It is, however, perhaps more concerned with ceremonial practice than some introductions to the Craft; this particular strand may not be to everyone's taste.

(This current edition comes from (the now defunct, I think) Pagan Media, a small publishing outfit run by West's husband. As has been speculated in previous reviews, I gather from the author's website that it is to be re-released in a new edition in the near future).

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh down to earth book on Witchcraft., 9 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Despite the slightly pretentious and uninformative title, this book is a great beginners guide to the world of Witchcraft. It really scores on being sensible and down to earth about a topic many approach from a very airy fairy perspective. Williams & West have done an excellent job of demystifying the beliefs and practices of Witchcraft, without destroying any of the Mystery.
The book provides practical, no nonsense advice about Covens and their workings, which should more than prepare any person venturing into the Craft. I have read thuis book several times and will no doubt refer to it, often in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars informative and educational but lacks real depth, 12 Mar 2002
By Daniel Griffith "Chattering Magpie" (Derbyshire UK) - See all my reviews

This book has a pretencious title that it doesn't quite live up to although the background to Withcraft belief is well written. There is a disturbing mixing of Christian terminology within the rites that does not belong in Paganism. The most obvious error being the statement that you do not have to be Pagan to be a Witch. The grammer of old style English mixed with modern is also rather distracting. Saying that there is a great deal of worthy information in this book and although the sabbat section could do with expansion, if you stick with it you will learn something. The book does contain a well worded circle casting and other rites. I am led to believe that Kate West's other books are far better as this book contains a great deal of promise that is not quite fulfilled. I feel that a revised edition with gramatical and spelling errors corected would be an improvement. The authors also need to revise their historical knowledge. Mary Queen of Scots was Elizabeth the first's cousin not sister.
