4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent portrayal of one man's journey of discovery..., 24 Sep 2001
But what Liam discovers is a world apart from that which he has previously known. Anyone who has ever placed a contact ad or even read one will be able to relate to this story, to the frank and at times disturbing nature of its content. Hartnett carves an intriguing and addictive path into the seemingly subversive and at times dangerous underworld of contact ads: all in the name of a bit of fun? This journey of discovery is ironic in that it is also a journey of self-destruction. The story is compelling and fascinating as Hartnett has an excellent grasp of the human condition, which he displays with razor sharp wit and (at times) glorious bitchiness. An excellent read, one that you will find hard to put down until it is finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gay fiction with an edge, 8 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I've read this book some time ago, but it still stands as one of my favourites. The story is well-written and has a definate edge to it. It shows a side of the gay scene that is rarely written about: the loneliness a lot of gays experience and the extremes they go to to fill that gap.

The main character, just having lost his partner, decides to place an ad in several newspapers just for fun, but along the way he gets in deeper and deeper. Some scenes are very funny, whilst others are more disturbing.

This novel definately pushes gay fiction into a whole new direction. More power to the author!
