4.0 out of 5 stars Useful guide to the places and items of Saudi Arabia., 14 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This is a very useful guide for the soon-to-be visitor or new resident to the Saudi Arabian peninsula. Not only are the major towns and cities described with emphasis on the markets and historical points of view, but also described are the fauna and flora of the areas. Falconry, clothing, customs and history are also discussed in the dictionary formatted book. Entries range from one paragraph to a page or more, but are concise and to the point. One glaring omission is the lack of a map. Later editions should correct this problem. Overall, for those moving to the area, they will presumably have their own maps. What were they thinking for not including a map? Still, for those travelilng to the area, it would be a general guide, not enough detail - no restaurants, hotels, airports, transportation information - but excellent for the armchair traveler. If you want a book with information on the historical and major features of all the major towns of the country, this will be a good start.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for everyone interested in Saudi Arabian life, 1 Mar 2002
By A Customer
As an expatriate in Saudi Arabia myself I as very excited to read this new book by Kathy Cuddihy...and I was not disappointed. Kathy Cuddihy has managed to cover the important facts for the everyday life in Saudi Arabia. She has done a lot of research and also writes from her own experiences during the many years of her life in Saudi Arabia. The book covers history and geography as well as fauna and flora of her second home country. Everyday business affairs are as well described as all aspects of the importance of tradition and Islam for Saudi nationals and expatriates.
The book is a must for everybody who plans to visit, work or live in Saudi Arabia or who is just interested in the special ways of life in the biggest and most important country of the Arabian Peninsula.
I can highly recommend Kathy Cuddihy's other books too. They deal with many adjustment problems an expatriates and especially a woman might have coming to Saudi Arabia. Her books are written with a special sense of humor, which makes them fun to the read. You recognize in all her books that she enjoyed and obviously still enjoys living in Saudi Arabia.
