Product Description

Product Description

Tibet is the cultural heart of inner Asia and the highest region on earth. This updated handbook has details of the entire country, including the provinces of Kham and Amdo. It aims to give insight into Tibet and the mountain kingdom of Bhutan, with the access points for travellers from Kathmandu and China. Practical information is included on the five "gateway" cities including Kathmandu. The book is part of an award-winning series of handbooks which are regularly updated. They are designed for all travellers, whatever their age or budget, and are edited by experienced and energetic travellers.

From the Publisher

This is one of our best selling guides. Not surprising as the author is just so knowledgeable. It appears that this skill could be spreading to his family. This new second edition is dedicated to Gyurme's daughter who, at the age of four months, recently accompanied him on an extensive 4,000km expedition through Amdo, Golok and Gyarong!

5.0 out of 5 stars An extensive yet readable guide to the whole Tibetan region., 12 Jul 2001
By A Customer
The Footprint Tibet Handbook gives excellent coverage of the entire region, unlike other guides such as the Lonely Planet, which tends to focus on the more well trodden areas. As such, it is most useful for independent travellers, particularly anyone intending to venture into the more remote areas. Apart from the coverage of the main sights and towns, there are recommendations for accommodation and other practicalities, and the rear has a useful guide to Buddhist icons. I found the Special Interest pieces really useful; 84 sections on subjects as diverse as Tibetan tents, Stupas and woodblock printing. The chapters on the various gateway regions, such as Chengdu and the Kathmandu/Arniko Highway, mean that, for most travellers, this is the only guide you'll need. The Bhutan section adds extra value and although I guess that few travellers would need it, I found that it has whetted my appetite! The author writes clearly and authoritatively, and on my trip I found that others were constantly asking to borrow it. Recommended for anyone wanting to do more than skim the surface of Tibet.

(REAL NAME)
No one knows Tibet like Gyurme Dorje. His level of cultural involvement in the country is evident from the detail and accuracy of this special guidebook. Leave the Lonely Planet on the shelf for once and travel with the real deal. Superb.
