Product Description

The Rough Guide to Rock
"And 20 years into their career, Marillion are in pretty good shape. Their 1994 album Brave is prog-rock’s finest moment."

Book Description
From Marillion’s current line-up with Steve Hogarth right back to its first players, Marillion have fashioned a career as an original, accomplished and enduring rock band.
Originally fronted by the charismatic singer Fish, with 1983’s Script for A Jester’s Tear Marillion ushered in a post-punk progressive rock renaissance. Starting with early pub gigs and regular spots at Aylesbury Friars, through the pioneering days of "Market Square Heroes", to the chart topping "Kayleigh"-era and on to the Steve Hogarth incarnation in 1989, Marillion have continued to make groundbreaking and innovative music and retain a furiously loyal and dedicated following, who have even gone so far as to directly bankroll a US tour and the making of an entire album.
Separated Out is not only the most extensively researched, comprehensive and factual history of the band since their earliest days. It also captures, as a series of anecdotes and memories, what Marillion continues to stand for in the hearts and minds of its fans and supporters: the tens of thousands of people who know, despite what others may think, that they are a part of something greater than just a band and its music.

5.0 out of 5 stars History made and completed!, 14 Dec 2002
By A Customer
This book is long overdue. Not that the author was slow in writing it but more in the sense that a book has finally been written that marillion/Fish fans can immerse themselves in. I have been a marillion/Fish fan since 1984 (aged 12)and throughout my life I feel I have had to constantly defend my choice of music taste whenever it has come up. People just didn't, and don't, understand my/our'Marillion'and their unique sound, style and attitude. This book has everything for marillion and Fish fans alike whatever year you entered their world and to many as with myself, it will feel like a diary to your marillion life. To those on the outskirts of marillion life. i.e.partners, releatives and friends of a marillion
fan(atic)who have endured but failed to understand our addiction to the marillion phenomenon, the book will help you understand what the hell it was and is all about. The book is very easy to read and chronologically it is near flawless. The author should be proud of his achievement and so should the rest of the mmarillion world. Best read in the wind on the moors. ( and quietly with the lights on!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading, 24 Feb 2003
By Shaye Breed "ladyspace" (Roswell, GA United States) - See all my reviews
Though by far not the biggest anorak out there, I consider myself to be quite a Marillion fan. Though it took me several weeks to finally sit down and read the thing (it's a story that I already knew the ending of, and one I thought I knew many of the preceding parts of as well), it wound up taking me less than three days total to finish this book, cover-to-cover, with quite a full social schedule in that time. Actually, I found the material very engaging. Mr. Collins has a way of hooking your interest and making the story seem, well, thrilling in spots-quite a few spots, actually. I found myself wondering, "well, how exactly *did* that turn out?" Quite a feat for a biography of a band I thought I knew fairly well. Many of the stories were entirely new to me, and it really feels as though Jon was there every step of the way, so well did he do his research. There are different viewpoints, from fans to the band themselves, to variously-involved people, which really seem to give the complete picture. Everything is covered, from the writing and recording processes to the other business aspects of the music to the fans' takes on things (and their opinions are not always positive!). The layout is particularly well-designed, with asides and pictures on many pages, and footnotes saved for the ends of the chapters. Fraser Marshall's album descriptions, though I'd read them all before, are certainly good enough to read again and are perfectly placed within the context of the rest of the story, and, indeed are part of it. The vignettes from the fans and "employees" (well, aren't they all fans, too?) are, in my opinion, a stroke of genius. And what could be more appropriate for this band than including personal accounts from their fans?

Perhaps some fans already know everything covered here-it's certainly possible, especially given the level of passion Marillion seem to ignite within their fans. But I doubt most fans know most of the stories, and even for those who do, it's a wonderful compilation of a lot of things, including some very useful information. My final verdict: this is a good book, required reading for any Marillion fan, and recommended for any rock 'n' roll fan who isn't entirely opposed to reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, 10 Jun 2003
By SnowDog (Cheshire, UK) - See all my reviews
Separated Out is quite simply the most definitive history of Marillion, which also brings the reader up to date with events which have taken place since Mick Wall's publication.

What makes this book a grasping read is the depth to which Jon Collins has immersed himself in all things associated with the band. As a chronological piece of work, the events are splendidly depicted via direct interviews with the band members, and perhaps as importantly, includes reflections from those whose lives have been touched by the music of Marillion either by working alongside them, or as one of the "freaks" and "anoraks" who have found themselves spiritually moved by their music. Highly recommended.
