Product Description

Book Description
HARMONY IN MY HEAD is the by-turns brash and funny, honest and harrowing, first-hand account of Steve Diggle: guitarist and one half of the songwriting duo that gave the world THE BUZZCOCKS - one of the most consistently successful hit-making outfits England ever produced. During the late '70s and early '80s the Buzzcocks notched up no fewer than eleven Top 20 hits in rapid succession before their untimely disintegration.

Diggle begins with his childhood and rebellious teen years growing up as a Mod on the tough council estates of Rusholme, before moving on to Manchester's musical year zero - the formation of The Buzzcocks and their baptism-of-fire debut gig at the Free Trade Hall in support of the Sex Pistols. Diggle charts the band's progress through the punk ranks and on to Top of the Pops and gives the lowdown on classic singles like Orgasm Addict, Promises and the worldwide wonder Ever Fallen in Love, while offering an individual perspective on punk contemporaries like the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Jam. In contrast to some of the more intellectual takes on punk, this is a classic rock n roll tale as Diggle takes advantage of all the drugs and groupies on offer to a successful touring rock band. HARMONY IN MY HEAD also documents the band's reformation and their eventual US breakthrough and shares Diggle's memories from Nirvana's last ever tour, on which The Buzzcocks were the opening act: Nirvana was the only band we considered worthy of supporting … and four days later Kurt blew his fucking head off - it was the bleeding same with Ian Curtis of Joy Division. We gave him a support slot, he asked my advice on his love life and then he fucking hanged himself. - Diggle is a hero to me and to thousands of others from that era and The Buzzcocks are iconic heroes to the day I die- Alan McGee. He's a boozin' shagger and I love him dearly… -Glen Matlock Features foreword contributions from Mick Jones, Alan McGee, Glen Matlock and Mani of the Stone Roses.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting account of a cultural event, 25 Dec 2003
By Tim Young (Denver, CO United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an interesting account of one of the most significant cultural movements of the last thirty years from someone who was more than a mere bystander. Diggle's story is frank, honest and benefits from the lack of academic analysis you often get with these works. It’s just a great shame he didn’t pay a bit more attention during his English lessons. This ain’t no Shakespeare and the rather pedestrian writing style and cliché ridden laddish stories (“I shagged me bird in a graveyard”, “I done some coke in the lavs”) become somewhat of a distraction to the real meat of the piece: namely that the Buzzcocks, though often overlooked, were a major part of a significant cultural movement. This book is well worth the read though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Steve Diggle, 6 Aug 2004
By Stuart Coote (England Northampton) - See all my reviews
This book has a good solid account of the Buzzcocks through Diggle's eyes, unfortunately he was pretty hammered the majority of the time. The grammar is pretty shite, but offers a slight insight into Diggles pickled mind. The bloke is after all an absolute legend, if not a writer.

2.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing, 29 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This book was unbelievably poorly written, which detracted somewhat from the actual tale being told. Were the publishers too tight to pay a copy-editor to clean up the appalling spelling, punctuation and grammar that made reading this book really hard work? And I would have expected Diggle's co-writer to be able to string a sentence together.

As a Buzzcocks fan from the release of Spiral Scratch, I was looking forward to getting stuck in to what the title promised. Instead, Diggle came across as a self-obsessed and deeply unattractive personality, unable to express himself without the excessive use of the F word. I shall put this book out of my head and stick to listening to the first three albums - far more satisfying.

Buzzcocks fans tended to the more intelligent end of the intellectual spectrum and are unlikely to want this badly written, smug, mysogynist nonsense. Read more
