As a 'lapsed' Deep Purple/Rainbow fan I found this book brought back so many memories of one of the classic hard rock outfits of the 70s and 80s. The text neatly follows all the rapid comings and goings of the musicians central to the story, while putting into context Ritchie's visions and objectives for the band. Extensive info on equipment, live recordings and concert dates make this indespensible to any rainbow fan.

Excellent book on an esoteric topic, pleasant reading whether you're a fan of the band or not. Davies has done a fantastic and thorough job of researching this band's extremely convoluted history, and writing about it in an informative and entertaining manner. More impressive, the writing is detached and objective, despite the fact that the author is a self-confessed huge fan, his first Rainbow gig "changing his life forever." Packed with Rainbow's history, band member histories, discography, gig list, collectibles, and more. Finally, it's amazing that Davies' day job is not as a journalist, but rather a quality control manager for a chemical company. More over Chris Welch. Time for a career change Roy Davies.

An interesting book about the history of (Blackmore's) Rainbow. If you already know this history of the band, I don't think there is much new here, as most of this book reads like a collection of newspaper and magazine articles. Also if your looking for any real information about why Blackmore is considered such a tyrant, there is little in here. Plenty of observations, but no real meat.

Worth reading, but all in all somewhat lacking.
