Product Description

Book Description

First issued in 1996, Rhinos, Winos & Lunatics has gained a reputation as one of the legendary on the road rock'n'roll travelogues. It tells the story of eight years in the life of rock band - Man , Wales' most durable musical exports.
Guitarist, Deke Leonard writes with wit, verve and panache of the 1968-76, the post-'Sgt Pepper' years when rock music expanded its frontiers as never before. The result is a book that tells the story of an era, not just a band.

From the Publisher

Man are a band from Wales with more history behind them than the Greeks. Rhinos, Winos & Lunatics is an hilarious account of life in the weirdest rock'n'roll band in the universe. Ablaze with razor-sharp wit, it is a stirring saga of courage, endurance and almost breathtaking stupidity.

5.0 out of 5 stars takes art of rock biography to new territories, 17 Aug 2001
By A Customer
During the 1970's Deke Leonard was guitarist and vocalists with classic Welsh space-rockers Man. For those of you who ain't never heard no Man, it's a bit like Grateful Dead without the boring bits. They are still around now. You can stumble upon them in small workingmen's clubs in Wales or 5,000 seater halls in Germany. It is like encountering someone engaged in a craft that was thought lost to humanity. Imagine of Kurt Vonnegut Junior had written a "Diary Of A Rock'n'Roll Star" type book and you will come somewhere close to imagining the way Deke Leonard writes. Tales of bizarre rock'n'roll excess-not the usual room smashing, far from it. Bassplayer Martin Ace's antics have a gentle Zen surrealist aspect. Leonard ably brings these events to life with his excellent and funny descriptive writing. He fleshes out the trials and tribulations of a 70s rock band by philosophising on the human condition, insulting or complimenting well-known personalities of the day, and lecturing at us on politics and history like the old-fashioned Welsh valleys lefty he most probably is. The part where Man encounter legendary Welsh comedian Tommy Cooper is quite simply one of the most moving and funny things I have ever read. Thoroughly recommended. There is a prequel "I Should Have Stayed In bed", dealing with his earlier years. This suffers little from his tendency to rubbish organized religion and Tories at any given opportunity: when playing church halls he would always raise the subject of kangaroos and Noah's Ark with the local priest. A good read, but not quite the classic that "Winos Rhinos And Lunatics" is. Colin B Says check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Literate Rock Star?, 18 Nov 2004

Make no mistake Deke Leonard comes across as a bit of a self important individual who seems to think only his opinion matters to the world, but, a very big but, when you write as well as he does and entertain so thoroughly he is easy to forgive for his flaws. This is memoir as entertainment to rival Spike Milligan. If you don't laugh loudly to the annoyance of all around you at least once a chapter then you have no soul. You don't need to know anything about his career or music to be entertained by this book. Buy it and anything else he produces.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on rock music I have ever read, 4 Nov 2001
By Melvin Kenyon (Derby) - See all my reviews

I do not expect that anyone reads books on rock music for their literary flourish or their perceptive views on the human condition. So on the rare occasions I read them it is with a large pinch of salt. This book, however, is an exception. Well-written, and very funny it charts the adventures of Deke Leonard and Man during the height of their success. They still play together. Martin Ace still brings a smile to the lips. Catch Man if you can but do not miss this book.
