Flow diagrams have been commonplace in cognitive science ever since the 'sixties, but have yet to address the emotional side of cognition. With few exceptions, modern diagram makers have focused their attention on perception, memory, motor control, and language, and have not looked at the "visceral" aspects of these activities. Put simply, there is no cognitive psychology of the Freudian id. This 18-page booklet presents ideas first put forward in conference, and attempts to redress this omission. It does this by considering the order of emergence of the various levels of the mind's control hierarchy, and by identifying various points within that hierarchy where ancestral systems interface with more recent ones. The argument is then illustrated by speculating as to how an artificial mind might have to organised if its designers wanted it to have not just experience, but emotionally laden experience.
