4.0 out of 5 stars A Wee Gem?, 17 Jun 2003
By Rychard Carrington (Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This limited-edition "opuscule" (minor work) is, apparently, a publication of the London Institute of Pataphysics; pataphysics being the name proto-Dadaist Alfred Jarry coined for his own philosophy of mad, grandiose illogic. Peter Blegvad is certainly worthy of Jarry's legacy, possessng the slyest and most consummate of wits, as evidenced in his songs and cartoons. The entire volume (i.e. twenty-three pages) is devoted to stones, in history, literature and myth. Here, even more than usual, Blegvad's conceits remind one of Jorge Luis Borges. The text presents itself as scrupulously researched, but can we be sure that all the quotes are genuine? Does the Institute itself really exist?

This is an unimposing work of intrigue and charm. Devotees of Blegvad, stones and pataphysics will be proud to possess it. But be warned that it is indeed slight; it can be read in one visit to the lavatory. The masterpiece "Leviathan" offers so much more Blegvad for the pound.
