Product Description

Synopsis

If you want to invest profitably, it is necessary to understand the psychology of the market - the emotions like fear, greed, panic and herd instinct that underpin its wild fluctuations. Rather than concentrate on purely financial ratios, psychologist and author David Cohen argues that the market is really driven, not by rational considerations, but by deep-seated psychological factors. The psychology of the market is brought to life in this book by interviews with many of the leading investors and fund managers, examining their real motives; it is aimed at anyone who has ever invested in the stockmarket or is thinking of doing so. Chapters include: "The Psychology of Risk and Risk Takers" and "Inside the Markets: The World of Brokers".

Really fascinating. A series of interesting insights, and, unusually for a topic like this, both serious and readable. The only real disappointment was that the attempt to develop a practical framework of appraising individual companies for their psychological associations for investors seemed very limp and meant the book tailed off.

...Psychologist. This book probably won't make you a million, but at least you'll understand how other people do make millions. It is a very insightful account into the morass of the stock market. Surprisngly, or maybe not so, many of the trillions of pounds which fly about the money markets every day have less to do with sophisticated machinery than with good old fashioned emotions. Are you a risk taker? being one of the predominant queries. There is even a quiz strategically place half way through to book to test you risk taking skills. Essential reading for anybody with an interest in the financial markets.
