Product Description

Product Description
Following in the footsteps of her successful BBC2 1998 series, "Coast to Coast", "As the Crow Flies" describes Janet Street-Porter's attempt to walk the 350 miles from Edinburgh Observatory to Greenwich Observatory - in a dead straight line. She discovers a new way of walking - the OS map isn't quite so handy when you can't stray off a line you've drawn on a map. What's more useful is a heavy clearing stick, the power of persuasion and the patience of a saint. Janet adopts the old ramblers' cause of the "right to roam", discovering some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain - as well as bargaining and begging her way into secure properties, dodging Boeing 737s on take-off, and invading army bases and Saturday morning golf tournaments, all in the name of completing this mammoth walk strictly as the crow flies. She also has plenty of amusing encounters along the way - not only with locals (including some irate farmers!), but also celebrity friends like Sting, Ewan McGregor, Vic Reeves and Elton John, showing her their local patches. "As the Crow Flies" is published as a companion to the seven-part BBC2 television series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!, 19 April 2008
I really did enjoy reading this book, I am a big fan of Janet Street Porter but even those who aren't so keen on her should give this book a go too.
It covers Janet's impressive walk of 350 miles from Edinburgh Observatory to Greenwich Observatory in a straight line and there are large sections of it which will had me howling with laughter and making me want to read on. I paticularly enjoyed the stories of the people she met through her travels including some very famous people. It also makes for fasnating reading as Janet takes you through different areas and places and documents well as to what she discovered. In all, this is a fantastic companion book to her great TV series from the 90s.
Highly recommened!
