Product Description
From the Author
M'Lords of the Admiralty approve !
In the review by a Portsmouth reader he suggests that "M'Lords of the Admiralty will cringe at every line." Not so! In fact, copies of 'Theirs not to do or die' seem to be circulating in both Whitehall and St.James's Palace and the feedback indicates that M'Lords do indeed have a sense of humour. In a letter from Whitehall, First Lord, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, GCB OBE ADC says "It is always a pleasure to receive a new account of naval exploits during the Second World War especially when a little humour and fiction are woven into the story." Good for him! And another letter from Stephen Lamport, Private Secretary to HRH The Prince of Wales, whilst naturally not offering any comment from His Royal Highness, does say: "Perhaps you would be very kind and thank the author, and give him at the same time The Prince of Wales's best personal wishes." His Royal Highness is known to have a good sense of humour and I'm sure he would be intrigued by the yarn. However, I sincerely hope that he didn't carelessly leave the book under a cushion at the palace. If Her Majesty the Queen or the Queen Mum got their hands on it and read of the carry-on aboard the Royal Yacht, like their illustrious forebear, Queen Victoria, they too might not be amused... --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rum, Bum and Baccy and World War Two, 26 Jan 2000
By A Customer
There are not many books set in World War Two that will make you laugh out loud - 'Theirs not to do or die' is a definite exception. We go off to war with James O'Neill, a young volunteer in the Royal Navy, sexually innocent and totally unprepared for life on the lower deck on one of His Majesty's men-of-war. Sex to O'Neill is a dirty word and a screw or a rivet - golden or otherwise - belong only in the ship's stores. His subsequent experiences in the disastrous August '42 Malta convoy, the invasions of Sicily and Normandy and the occupation of Germany, are historically accurate and disclose some surprising details that you won't find in Mr. Churchill's History of World War Two. There are tender moments of innocent love and disappointment here as well as moments of wildly explicit hilarity. Death and destruction, however, are never too far away on the war-time ocean waves and they too take their toll. Brehony writes in the bawdy, robust language of the era and makes you feel that you too are in there with O'Neill and his sometimes lunatic superiors. M'Lords of the Admiralty will cringe at every line, nevertheless this is a fun read you shouldn't miss.
