From the Author
M'Lords of the Admiralty approve !In the review by a Portsmouth reader he suggests that "M'Lords of the Admiralty will cringe at every line." Not so! In fact, copies of 'Theirs not to do or die' seem to be circulating in both Whitehall and St.James's Palace and the feedback indicates that M'Lords do indeed have a sense of humour. In a letter from Whitehall, First Lord, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, GCB OBE ADC says "It is always a pleasure to receive a new account of naval exploits during the Second World War especially when a little humour and fiction are woven into the story." Good for him! And another letter from Stephen Lamport, Private Secretary to HRH The Prince of Wales, whilst naturally not offering any comment from His Royal Highness, does say: "Perhaps you would be very kind and thank the author, and give him at the same time The Prince of Wales's best personal wishes." His Royal Highness is known to have a good sense of humour and I'm sure he would be intrigued by the yarn. However, I sincerely hope that he didn't carelessly leave the book under a cushion at the palace. If Her Majesty the Queen or the Queen Mum got their hands on it and read of the carry-on aboard the Royal Yacht, like their illustrious forebear, Queen Victoria, they too might not be amused...
