Product Description

Synopsis
Part secret cultural history, part confessional, FLESH TRADE is one man's trawl through the good, the bad and the ugly of the UK sex underground. Bruce Barnard decided he wanted to get behind the lurid tabloid headlines and the sex industry PR campaign to see what really lay in the belly of the beast. The result isn't wholly pleasant, but it is filthy, disturbing, often funny and always fascinating. The aim of FLESH TRADE is simple - in the words of its author: "I'm not making my excuses and leaving when the action kicks off, I'm sticking around and being a nuisance."

4.0 out of 5 stars SEX, 30 Jan 2006
Barnard deals with sex in an adult manner, which is refreshing to say the least. It is a charming, witty, brutal and hideously honest encounter with sexuality. I laughed out loud at some sections and found myself disgusted at others, but it was always facinating.

I deducted one star simply because he's living the man-dream and making a living from watching porn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Knowingly Underground..., 22 Nov 2004
Barnard has attempted (and achieved) the apparently impossible. He has written a funny - very funny at times - clever and thoughtful book about perhaps the least funny area of modern life. In doing so he makes a case not only for himself as a gifted writer, but for the many undervalued and neglected sex workers whose industry is the flesh trade. Not everyone will share his love for the Hogarthian gallery of misfits and wierdos, but they are faithfully reported, and with a sufficient degree of affection and respect to ensure that one is neither turned off nor, conversely turned on by the often eye-watteringly graphic descriptios of filth to which the author was evidently witness. If you are looking for a Virgil to take you Dante-like through the rings of the Daily Mail's conception of what Hell must be like, then Barnard is your man, and this is your book. You will certainly never think about the subject, or react to its reportage, the same way again. A brilliant debut work by a very gifted young author. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars flesh trade, 3 Mar 2006
By Victoria Woolley (Plymouth, Devon United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Barnards description of the British sex industry, gave me a greater understanding and empathy of the people who work within it. Not only is the book incredibly descriptive, sometimes very graphic, it is also displays a huge amount of warmth and humour. Whilst reading Flesh Trade I almost felt as if I knew the author personally, his candour and character shone through. Great book.
