5.0 out of 5 stars CONCISE BUT USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE, 23 Mar 2001
By steve@ldpa.demon.co.uk (Croydon, England) - See all my reviews
This long awaited concise but user-friendly guide to the legal situation surrounding fundraising in the UK is likely to become a standard reference for everyone who raises funds in the voluntary sector.

A complicating factor in regard to charity law in this area is that a number of laws in a variety of areas affect the work of both professional fundraisers and fundraising staff in voluntary organisations. Staying legal requires more than keeping up to date with the Charties Acts of 92 and 93. This new volume either contains all the info required or points the reader in the right direction for more specialised information or advice.

The impetus for this book was a two-day seminar on Fundraising and the Law that Bates, Wells & Braithwaite have been running for some years in conjunction with the Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers.

A list of the chapter subjects helps convey the usueful and comprehensive breadth of this tome: Introduction, Institutional Fundraising, Fundraising from Individuals, Collections, Lotteries, Events, Employee Fundraising, Money from Business, Gifts in kind, Charities and commercial trading, Contracts, Data protection, Liabilities and claims, Insurance, Advertising, Commercial participators, Professional fundraisers, Payment methods, Tax relief for donations, Value Added Tax and fundraising, Intellectual property, Trading companies, and Criminal offences and the impact of the criminal law on fundraising.

An unusual aspect of this collaboration is that each chapter was drafted by a specialist lawyer and then reviewed and enhanced by an experienced fundraiser.

The appendices include useful reference material including copies of the ICFM recommended contracts for situations such as engaging a consultant or professional fundraiser. It is helpful to have this to hand to comply with the legal requirements for such agreements.

The writing style of this guide is very accessible to both newcomers and experienced hands. It can be used as a reference book, as an introduction to a topic that is growing in importance and/or as a text for students of fundraising or charity law.

The cover price is quite reasonable especially considering its reference value.
