3.0 out of 5 stars well illustrated and informative, but lacks detail, 14 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This book is beautifully presented and is obviously a labour of love. Each water colour picture has been done beautifully and represent odonata well.Their are unfortunatly a number of problems which make this book of limited use in the field.
Despite the painting being very good they have limited use for the real enthusiast. They lack the minor details which give the dragonfly a persona make it mor difficult to identify them.
Their are also a number of publishing mistakes which lowers the quality of the writing. The writing is very similar of dragonfly books of this level which stops it standing out of the crowd.
Lastly it lacks pictures of the small red eyed damselfly which shows it has already been outdated.
I'm sure many people will enjoy this book and I think it is an asset to my wildlife book collection, but it has numerous problems which give it limitations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable but outdated, 22 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This book is probably aimed at the birdwatcher rather than the serious entomologist. This I feel is reflected in the plates which are in my opinion not a patch on either Askew or Lewington.
Although the plates are very artistic and attractive they lack the real detail that the other above mentioned artists have in their field guides. Also this guide is already out of date due to several new British species being discovered.
If you had to buy just one field guide I Personally would go for R.Askew Dragonflies of Europe, which is superb.
