My search to find the site of the manor house at Cardross where Robert the Bruce died began thirty years ago. The site has still not been positively identified, but over 300 other castle sites have. There is detailed coverage of the major sites in the area, such as Dumbarton, Craignethan and Bothwell. But there are also the other numerous fortified houses and castles of the area, both extant and long vanished. I have attempted to identify every castle site in the area. My careful research is reflected in the entries which provide as much detail as possible on each site, including family,local and national history, architecture, legends, ghosts, and visitor information.
