Product Description

Book Description

This is the first book to be devoted to the almost legendary Finlay MacQueen (1862-1941). He was a man of two worlds: the remote archipelago of St Kilda - a scattering of islands 45 miles west of Uist, in the Outer Hebrides - and the much gentler landscape of Fife where he spent his last few years. The book also deals with a significant chapter in Scottish social history - the last days of a 1000 year old tradition of remote island life. In 1930, thirty-six islanders, the remnants of a proud, self-reliant population, were evacuated to the mainland.

Finlay was a character - his own man! Though dour and at times cantankerous, who drew respect from those who met him.

From the Publisher

There is a certain poignancy in publishing a title such as this, dealing as it does with a community that was once the most isolated in Great Britain; for when St Kilda was evacuated, its mantle of isolation fell to "lonely Colonsay", where our publishing company is based. On New Year's Day 1999, Colonsay's own population was one hundred and thirteen.
