Product Description

Synopsis

Based on original research, and making use of significant archive resources, this book provides an insight into the provision of basic communication routes that were to be fundamental to the social and economic development of the Highlands. The book begins with a brief history of such roads as existed in the Highlands prior to 1800 and continues with the problems presented by the ambitious plans of Thomas Telford and his colleagues to link east and west, north and south of the Highlands, together with the Islands, for ease of communication and the development of the region. In due course, this work overcame the obstacles and eventually created the Scotland of today.
