4.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, emotional drama about four black women in the UK, 28 Jul 2000
By A Customer
December 30, 1998. I really liked this book. The characters - Jeanette, a sexually promiscuous student, Nikki, an actress who gets off on white men and has to create an alter ego because she's so insecure, the most uptight journlaist you'll ever meet, called Alexandrea, and the mysterious Mavis, who speaks in Jamaican dialect and used to be a prostitute in Jamaica - all of them are very well described. The language Ross uses is rich and beautiful, and the drama of the women's lives keeps you going until the end. Someone gets raped - and the whole thing reminded me of the Mike Tyson case in its discussions about the implications of black on black rape. Thought provoking to say the least - and I really liked the introduction to Jamaican dialect - which is very funny. Does anyone know anything else about this author and what else she's written? In the meantime, read the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 28 Jul 2000
By A Customer
June 28, 1999. At first the book starts out a bit slow, but afterwards, you just cannot put it down. Being Jamaican and having spent 6 months in London, made me appreciate the book even more, the language, the symbolisms, etc. It is funny and sad at the same time, but there's definitely a lesson to be learnt at the end of the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling story that touches your emotions, 28 Jul 2000
By A Customer
March 21, 1999. All The Blood is Red kept me turning those pages . . . I had to find out what would happen next. I wanted to hear what other funny, outrageous things Mavis would say. I could hear the echo of people I knew in so many of her thoughts, and the expressive language (Jamaican Patois) brought back memories of Jamaica - and a good dose of nostalgia! The realism with which Leone Ross crafts her characters captivated me, and I look forward to her next novel.
