Product Description

Review
For a book small enough to fit comfortably in your back pocket, this one is surprisingly packed with pictures and information about dozens of major new or recent buildings scattered throughout the streets of the English capital. In many ways these are exciting times for architecture. Think of the gleaming towers of Docklands, the rebirth of Hoxton, Channel 4's futuristic headquarters. Or walk along the Regent's Canal where developers are snapping up former industrial buildings and turning them into stunning apartment blocks. However, while the British National Lottery has provided new money and impetus for a certain amount of public building there is, as the author points out in her introduction, a downside. Very few provisions have been made for public housing and while some areas have seen improvements, others - particulary in east London - have been allowed to slide. This will bother some and not others, but is something worth bearing in mind as we build more and more gated and inaccessible private spaces, closing privileged apartment dwellers and security-tagged corporate workers off from the world outside. Whatever view you take, Hardingham's informative commentary, coupled with stimulating black and white photographs make this a fine guide to London's most significant recent architecture. (Kirkus UK)
