5.0 out of 5 stars A guide to understand different ways of business thinking, 23 May 2002
By Patrick Merlevede (Lembeke, Vlaanderen (Belgium, Europe)) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Emotional Intelligence is about being able to understand the thinking of yourself and people you work with, and even being able to predict how they will react and what will motivate them. This book is a great contribution in that area. It teaches you to look behind the content of a "game" and to find its structure. Is the structure helpful or not? For instance, there are the games called "play it safe" and "anticipate all the possible losses": by combining these plays the player will steer clear from any possible opportunity because there is some risk involved. These games take take away energy, give you stress, make you feel powerless. If we then look at "experts", successful business people, we see that they play other games, which power them up and give them resources. Knowing the Business games Michael Hall describes will be of tremendous help in negotiating, resolving conflicts, management, ...

For those of you that think: "Oh another NLP book", here is a little side note: The best books written by NLP experts nowadays seem to have little to do with NLP at all! A couple of days ago I got my hands on "Alpha Leadership" the latest book, co-authored by Robert Dilts, and as that book, "Games Business Experts Play" doesn't require the slightest knowledge of NLP. The persons writing these book use the NLP knowledge to find out what experts do and write that down in a really clear, making the reader think "Why haven't I thought of that before"

Just one point of warning to the reader (and maybe a suggestion of improvement to the author?). I think that rationally few people will object that the games Michael hall recommends are better than the negative games. I think that the real challenge is to stop playing the negative game and starting the positive ones. My recommendation at this point: try on these new games for some time and find out which ones are the most helpful to you!

Patrick E.C. Merlevede
