4.0 out of 5 stars A highly readable introduction to hypnosis, 17 Dec 2003
By A Customer
For the beginner, this is a highly readable introduction to the science of hypnosis, giving basic coverage of the approaches of Erickson, Elman and Estabrooks and giving some useful suggestibility tests. Pricey for what you get and far too basic for anyone with prior knowledge of hypnosis, it is nevertheless a nice introduction and leaves you wanting to know more. The frequent references to Time Line Therapy are slightly offputting (a clear attempt to sell Tad James' other book on that subject - not worth the money). A good starter text.

1.0 out of 5 stars Deeply disappointing, 2 Jun 2002
By Alastair Ross (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had hoped to broaden my understanding and learn more about the methods of Estabrooks and Elman. Sadly, I was disappointed. The treatment of Ericksonian hypnosis is shallow and skates hurriedly past many of the essential elements of his methods. When the authors move on to Estabrooks and Elman they deliver precious little on which to build understanding.

In many chapters they give extensive 'inductions' that the reader can work through with a partner. Some may find them useful. For me these are dull and formulaic, missing, as they do, the crucial factor of setting the induction into the context of the client.

The bibliograpy seems to be the high point: 19 pages of detailed references.

For those seeking understanding of Ericksons methods, try to get hold of a copy of "Trance-Formations: Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis" by Bandler and Grinder - an elegantly written text of tremendous depth that puts this allegedly 'comprehensive guide' in the deepest shade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff for the beginner, 21 Oct 2005
Tad has a nice way of trancing you out in the first few lines of a book and keeping you hooked and all the while making sure that you are learning while you go. This book is not 'a comprehensive guide' although it is definitely a 'comprehensive introduction'.
As someone fairly experienced in NLP and trance I found it informative and helpful in understanding other hypnosis models apart from the Erickson model favoured in NLP teachings.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to gain a very good basic understanding of hypnosis and hypnotherapy techniques.
