Product Description

David Wigg - Express Showbusiness Writer
'Frank Allen of The Searchers takes us on a vivid journey of one of the most fascinating and memorable periods in rock history. Honestly told and coloured by Frank`s acerbic humour, here is a musician who not only survived the Sixties, but actually remembers them!' David Wigg - Express Showbusiness Writer.

Book Description
Frank Allen, front man and bass player with the legendary group The Searchers takes an irreverent look at globetrotting around the world as a superstar with the famous 60`s band. From the Falklands to Bosnia Frank`s account is both humorous and informative and makes great reading for anyone who is interested in The Searchers or music of the 60`s.

Travelling Man is filled with stories. The early days at the famous Star Club in Hamburg with The Beatles who were on the brink of immortality. And his first embarrassing encounter with a young, acid-tongued John Lennon. The astounding American package show that performed six times daily for a week and boasted a lineup that included The Searchers, Dusty Springfield, Millie, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, The Ronettes, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, The Shangrilas and a host of others. And how Frank turned down the chance to be the father of Dusty Springfield`s love child.

The pages include a bevy of intriguing characters. The Filipino minder who wanted to kill the roadie. The barmaid who possessed a bosom on which you could land a helicopter. And the lady agent who was 'the face that lunched a thousand shits'.

Frank describes what it is like to land in war-torn Bosnia on the very day the UN commenced the bombing of Sarajevo, and how it feels to pound out your thirty-year-old hits to a hangar full of nineteen year old squaddies. You can also find out why he describes sex for him as being 'like a dog walking on its hind legs'. This book is not just an insight into the travelling life of a pop group. It is written with an impish sense of humour that will have you chuckling in your seat.

Frank knows everyone in the business and many of them are in this book. Travelling Man is a must read for all pop lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big delightful surpize! See my words below!, 11 Aug 2001
By George H. Wells (Hauppauge, New York United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
To my surprize, I found this book to be the best British autobiography since Patrick Macnee gave us _Blind in One Ear : the Avenger Returns_ in 1989. The writing is so full of surprizing metaphors and wit, that I predict many sentences and some paragraphs from this book will be in editions of _Barlett's Familiar Quotations_ a hundred years from now. The sections on Mr Allen's childhood are as fascinating and well told (though too full of cuss words for young readers) as any section from _Harry Potter_ of equal length. I hope there are more books from Mr Allen and more recorded music as well. Unless this has made the bestseller lists in England without my knowledge, buy it now; I bet it's been overlooked. The inside view of the pop music world of the 1960's through the present is fascinating, but actually irrelevant: it's the way the darned book is written that makes it the reading highlight of the last 12 years for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Man and his Pen!, 24 Jul 2001
I must admit rifgt away I'm a big fan of The Searchers from their days on the London Paladium etc. This book written by Frank Allen is not just about the Searchers on the road but a insight to what happens to a group who have been on the road since 196666666? Frank first joined the Searchers when he met them in Germany,The book starts really from there, it tell's you tales of (not just a member of a group who have had major hits right round the world) what was good and bad in the 6os.

Franks life with Dusty Springfeild, Frank tells it like it is, its funny, sad, etc etc. If your like me a fan of 60s music, this book is for you, the book gave me a lot of pleasure, its all there all you have to do is buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just an biography - a very entertaining read, 7 Feb 2000
By A Customer
Maybe if readers are looking for a biography of The Searchers some may be a little disappointed - but "Travelling Man" was never meant to be a biography, or indeed an autobiography, and it is all the richer for that. Its subtitle is "On the Road with the Searchers" and it is Frank Allen's amusing and perceptive view of a life of travel with the Searchers. This of course includes a lot of the Searchers story - as Frank has spent thirty six years with the group - but its just as much a travelogue and a witty insight into the many different countries, cultures and personalities encountered by an entertainingly observant man during a life as a musician "on the road".
