Four Four Two, February 2002
Spurling mixes well-detailed and colourful journalism with moments of emotional partisanship.
A worthy guide to a volatile era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jon Spurling has done it again, another must for all GUNNERS, 19 Oct 2001

This is the second book by 'Gunners' supporter Jon Spurling, and he has managed again to hit the nail on the head, he pulls no punches, this book as some top rate interview with Arsenal players and supporters. It's a good read for all football fanatics and a must for all Gunners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-live the highs and lows, 18 Nov 2002
By A Customer
A great book for Arsenal fans. The book surveys the nineties, from championship to double (and the les memorable in-between bits) and not only provides a compelling narrative but also pauses for analysis and reflection, and this is the strength of the book. I particularly enjoyed the "What if George Graham had been hit by a bus in the summer of '94?" scenario and yes, I agree he would have been a legend on a par with Chapman, strange though that seems now. Spurling's evaluation of Ian Wright, perhaps the symbol of nineties Arsenal, is also excellent. I had genuinely forgotten how truly terrible Arsenal were in the mid-nineties (Ian Selley!)and I am grateful for being reminded in detail about this period. It makes our current success all the more sweet and satisfying!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great review of a dramatic decade, 30 Mar 2005
Arsenal's reputation for success in the present is built largely on the deeds of the club in the 1990s following on from their dramatic championship win in 1989. The decade was littered with silverware as Arsenal won the league, a cup double, a European trophy and the famous double. Read how the ghastly defeats against Benfica and Wrexham in the 1991/92 season forced George Graham onto the defensive and caused him to ditch shimmering talents like Limpar, Thomas and Rocastle, in favour of dross like McGoldrick, Jensen (possibly the worst Arsenal player ever) and Carter. Yet by the end of the decade Arsene Wenger had the team playing brilliant attacking football once more. Despite the heroism (champions with only one defeat in 1991, Ian Wright's goalscoring exploits, the late surge to glory in 1998) and the heartbreak (Nayim from the halfway line, Gazza's free-kick, Giggs's wonder goal) much of the drama of the 1990s took place off the pitch. The Bond Scheme which helped destroy Highbury is documented in here, as is the George Graham scandal and sacking, the slide of Adams and Merson into alchoholic addiction, the Bruce Rioch farce and the viability of Higbury as Arsenal's home in the 21st century. Despite the six trophies we read how the 1990s was a decade of missed opportunity. Arsenal knocked Liverpool off their perch in 1991, but failed to build on it and the Gunners spent the rest of the decade chasing another Northern red menace. The aftermath of the title triumphs of 1998, 2002 and 2004 show that, sadly, the lessons have not been learned. Spurling is a passionate Arsenal fan and uses a lot of humour (often at Arsenal's expense) and mixes his own recollections with those of the fans. It was a decade of Arsenal legends - Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp and Ian Wright - and you can read about the club's exploits in the 1990s in this great book. A must for Arsenal fans.
