5.0 out of 5 stars Irreverent and enjoyable view of a great Gunners decade, 2 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I'm a Liverpool fan, which is a bit like a Trojan enjoying the Illiad - you just know it's going to end badly. The author has obviously poured his heart into this project with many candid interviews with the main protagonists and a great number of informed opinions and anecdotes. Spurling obviously has a keen sense of humour (the fact that he stuck with the woeful early 80s Gooners supports this) and writes in the language of the fan. If only for a happy ending........

5.0 out of 5 stars All Guns Blazing is an excellent book, 30 Jul 2001
By A Customer
All Guns Blazing is an excellent book, which reminded me just what it was like to support Arsenal before the impact of Sky TV, the Taylor report and expensive foreign imports. There are some superb candid interviews with ex-players like Charlie Nicholas and Liam Brady.

The book is also very funny in places, not like the rather dry official books which are churned out elsewhere. It is refreshingly honest and takes the reader through a bizarre, yet riveting journey through the '80s, with plenty of pop-culture and political references thrown in.

The York and Walsall defeats happened, whether we like it or not, but Anfield '89 is the crucial moment. The book describes the build up and drama of this match in gripping style. Arsenal fans should definitely buy this book - you won't be disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for every Gooner, 20 April 2001
By A Customer
This is a great book. Admittedly, only Arsenal fans will love it...I have read many books about football and this is up there with "Fever Pitch" and "Football Against the Enemy". The 80's were a special decade indeed for Arsenal fans and the author has dealt with them in an informative and thoughtful way. Too many football books are written in the style of dull, game-by-game, minute-by-minute accounts, heavy with statistics... This isn't. It immerses you in nostalgia for a simpler, more honest age, reminds you of fading memories and has the sort of analytical approach rare in footie books. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.
