5.0 out of 5 stars Heads Down No Nonsense Punk Rock Gravy, 19 Jan 2001
'Cranked Up Really High' is probably the most energetic, hilarious and irreverent tome ever scrawled on the subject of 'punk rock'. From the outset, it becomes clear that Home's main target is the crop of 'musicologists' who've mystified the music way out of proportion to its trashy pop status. Therefore, art bore Greil Marcus (author of 'Lipstick Traces', a pantheon of pretentious nonsense which attempted to link the Sex Pistols with 1950s and 60s French intellectuals) gets verbally butchered in 'Cranked Up...', though as Home admits, he bears a grudge with Marcus over some earlier art-related matter. However, it's not in the author's satirical treatment of genre theory that this book really comes alive - it's the championing of such obscure and defunct bands as the Snivelling Shits, Crisis, the Pork Dukes, the Bleach Boys and the Art Attacks, as Home drags the reader through a labyrinth of gigs, clubs and incidents from the late 1970s in London. Heckling [ ] groups and forcing them to flee the stage, stomping right-wing macho boneheads, food fights, punch ups and all-out riots are captured here and described vividly, making it a constantly lively read. The book also covers the much neglected and often maligned 'genres' of Oi! and Riot Grrl, though I think Home could have maybe gone into the latter 'movement' a bit more. At times, the endless references to groups and records which some readers might never have heard of (the first time I read it I thought Home had invented a few for a laugh) drags a bit, but the author enlivens proceedings by printing the lyrics, most of which are worth a look, as there's some great raps. This book is definitely recommended, if only to find out which notorious skinhead Oi! brothers were actually the privileged sons of a liberal Scottish painter, and how nazi 'hardmen' Skrewdriver began as a Rolling Stones cover band who got beaten up by Teddy Boys and imploded in a mess of paranoia and repressed gay angst!!
