5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for walking in Madeira, 15 Jun 2006
By Frank Genar "frank_ge" (Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Many, many people tried to convince me that a week's holiday is sufficient to see all of Madeira. I had never been there, wanted to make a 3week walking holiday at Madeira and started to seriously doubt whether this was a good idea.

The most important thing this book did for me was to help me make the good decision for this 3 week holiday. The 35 walks are clearly described and let you see a wide variation of the island's landscapes.
There is a brief but good textual description of each walk.
Each walk has got a map with it, but since this is black& white print it is of little use while walking, so you should also have the related map (same author).
A disadvantage is that the book mostly stays on the rather safe 'family' side related to vertigo risk; that could keep you away from some of the more amazing Madeira landscapes like Pico Arieiro - Pico Ruivo walk and Boca do Risco - Larano walk. So if you just go on where the book suggests to stop or suggests to take a guided tour, you'll get there, but it must be said that there is a risk.
The 'GPS ready' label means that some 500 waypoints are printed out in the book. There is no way to transfer these in an electronic way to your GPS without buying another product. Though it might be sufficient if you just enter the starting & ending coordinates of each walk you plan to make into your GPS.
