New 2nd edition published Sept 99. In the north-east of Mallorca the ancient towns of Alcudia and Pollenga are a long way from the island's tabloid image. Surrounding these historic centres are tracts of beautiful, easily accessible, countryside. The landscape varies from the flat alluvial plain stretching from Pollenga to the coast and down past the S'Albufera wetlands nature reserve, to craggy limestone ridges and sheer cliffs along the northern coastline. In the early morning mist the Alcudia peninsula has an ethereal quality with its mist shrouded mountains appearing to float above the sea. This 'magic' peninsula could justify a week's walking on its own if only it were more accessible by public transport. Our walks on the peninsula will whet your appetite for more. Botanists will enjoy the wide variety of endemic species which cloak the landscape and the area is already famous with bird watchers; for the best of these two interests time your visit for between February and June. The Alcudia coast caters for mass tourism in modern hotels (which close in the off-season) but our choice is to stay in the stylish resort of Puerto Pollenga.

A wide range of walking routes ranging from easy strolls up to energetic ascents including three/four routes up the Talaia de Alcudia. This region of Mallorca will appeal to a wide range of walkers.

This guide gives detailed itineries for a variety of walks in the area, many of them well off the beaten track. Since there are no public footpaths as such in Mallorca, this little guide is invaluable in getting you into the more interesting and isolated areas of this part of the island. The small format of the walking guide and the detail of the accompanying map mean that it is easy to carry in a map pouch or even in your shirt pocket! One small criticism would be that the grading of the walks does not always appear to be consistent. For example, one of the walks which involves a scramble on a steep rocky path is classed as easier than a long slog up a metalled path.
All in all though, this is an excellent guide, and the instructions are detailed enough to prevent you from getting lost, as well as pointing out landmarks of interest along the way. If you enjoy walks of about 1 to 4 hours duration and want to see a bit of Mallorca that you can't see from your car, then this is the book for you.

I found this map less than useful. Not only were paths not where they were supposed to be, but there were errors in topography. Despite their claims of new mapping, it was a poor example of map making. Walks indicated were also strolls down country lanes

Madeira "Tour & Trail" 1:40,000 scale map of this island is the first in a series of new style vector-graphic designed maps for a wide range of overseas destinations. This Madeira Map was researched in 1999 to produce the Edition 2,000 publication which will be available in September 1999. In addition to the normal map features we have included all the published walking routes highlighted on the map. Whichever guide book you use (and I think you should always carry mine) this map will give you the definitive routes as at 1999. David Brawn - author/designer.
