Book Description
The popular image of Lanzarote is Sun, Sea and Desert. While this is largely true of the resorts there is a lot to discover on the island. Although our guide is based on the main resort of Puerto del Carmen, our walking routes take in the other resorts of Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Most of our walks are linked to the local bus service, the exceptions are those routes which start or finish in the pretty village of Femes. Landscapes range from small mountains and deserts to the greenery of the Haria Valley, including an unusual route down into the valley. Walking through the surreal landscape of La Geria is a must along with the view from the top of Atalaya de Femes (an energetic climb). Interesting 'tipicos' allow us to sample the local cuisine at the end of several walking routes. Choosing where to stay depends on the travel packages on offer; Lanzarote's speciality is in self-catering apartments. Our choice is for the main resort of Puerto del Carmen during the winter season, October to May. We found Playa Blanca rather disappointing, being isolated from the rest of the island by a dusty featureless desert but it does have a ferry service across to Fuerteventura. Costa Teguise is a modern resort but very time-share based. Dry climate is a Lanzarote speciality so you are unlikely to need wet-weather gear - although we have experienced torrential rain on the island! Suitable for a wide range of leisure walkers.
