5.0 out of 5 stars The strangest and funniest writer alive!, 21 Jul 2002
By diane jeyes (Weymouth, England) - See all my reviews
I read an advance copy of this book and I think Gibson is one of our strangest and funniest writers alive. If you haven't discovered him yet, try this one for size. It's a treat! He takes a swipe at everything, from celebrity chefs to romantic fiction, from God to professional wrestling. But don't show it to your granny - it does get very rude!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this man's books!, 17 Jul 2002
By gill h (london United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Miles Gibson is one of the sharpest, darkest, funniest writers there is - and Mr Romance is one of his best: sexy, racy, thought provoking and intelligent, but, as ever, an easy, fluent read. Just fantastic! I'm now buying a second copy as I lent the first one out and never got it back...

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Fantastic Fiction, 15 Jul 2002
I first came across Miles Gibson through 'Gentleman's Relish' on BBC TV. Hooked, I searched out all of his books I could find and discovered a literary genius with the power to take you to worlds you never knew existed ? not all of them pleasant! So when I found this novel on an airport bookshelf I was thrilled, and devoured it in a single sitting on my flight to New York. 'Mr Romance' is a wonderful book, with a great story and about as well written as anything you'll find. It's characters are rich and diverse, a rum lot you'd not really want to have much to do with in real life. The narrator, Skip, is an adolescent choc-a-bloc with 18-year old contradictions and his crush on the God-obsessed Dorothy manages to be touching, sad and funny at the same time. The lugubrious Mr Marvel is a fantastic creation, as are the volcanic 'literary genius' Senior Franklin, and the lovely Janet, all thrown together in a down-at-hell boarding house, run by Skip's wrestling-obsessed parents. 'Mr Romance' is a wonderful book, written by one of our finest writers, and I strongly urge you to read it. You'll be glad you did.
