Product Description

Synopsis
Stephen and Caroline Day are a normal young couple quietly getting on with their lives, then the neighbours from hell move in upstairs. After a couple of weeks of police inactivity, Stephen snaps and accidents start to happen.

From the Author
Killing me not so softly
Noise Abatement is the most autobiographical of my crime novels so far in that I really did have the neighbours from hell move in above me. Thereafter I hardly ever had a stress-free dayor more than four hours of sleep each night. Imagine if you can't choose when to set your alarm - because you'll be woken by the ndighbours' radio alarm clock at 6am. You can't watch TV or rent a video because the neighbours are making too much noise for you to hear anything. You can't go to bed early because you know from bitter experience that they're liable to come home at 3am and entertain their mates for a couple of hours. Like Caroline in the book I endured all of this and like Caroline I became increasingly ill. When the authorities couldn't improve the daily hell I started to dream of literally silencing the noisemakers forever. Stephen, Caroline's husband in Noise Abatement, sets out to do just that. Obviously I'd never recommend killing someone - but I can understand these real life neighbours who have been driven to despair by repetitive sound and who have forever silenced the uncaring culprits. Stephen initially succeeds in hurting his enemies but events spiral horrifyingly out of control...

Early reviews have described the book as `kinky, surreal and full of suspense' (Scotland on Sunday) and `all the more gripping because it could happen to anyone.' (Salisbury Journal.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychologically complex, truly disturbing fare., 25 Nov 2000
By A Customer
'Noise Abatement' is going to take you somewhere you might not want to go. Stephen and Caroline Day are nice young professionals, living the life of the young and in love until a group of young men moves into the flat upstairs. All night parties, all day music, screeching alarm clocks, banging and stamping... it's not long until the health of both is being seriously affected, and their lives become a waking nightmare. The Police don't help, the Environmental Agencies don't help. Soon, Stephen is beginning to fantasise about how he can end their torture, and not long after that he sets about making fantasy reality.

The novel is a superb example of 'how far would you go?'. With the Days beginning as such nice people, as readers we empathise achingly with the degradation of their quality of life. As the tone darkens, and Stephen becomes more ambitious in the lengths he will go to in order to regain a semblance of normal life, we follow his journey intimately, and it's hard not to sympathise and even encourage. Then you're forced to take a step back and witness what he has done, what you yourself might have done under such extreme provocation. Reading the novel is a disturbing glance into an alternate you, and what you see might be shocking indeed. Buy it, for goodness' sake...

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping thriller about a problem that affects us all., 22 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This is a tense believable thriller set in the real world, not in some ludicrous thriller writer's fantasy. Although the story twists and turns it is always believable, something her more famous rivals don't always manage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but....., 7 Feb 2001
Like many modern UK crime books Noise Abatement is excellent but only up to a point. What is lacking is the climatic ending often found in american crime novels. For the last forty pages I found the ending predictable and therefore rather sad to read.

That said Carol Anne Davies has a superb writing style and must have a very 'interesting' mind.

I am sure Carol Anne Davis will write a superb novel one day and I will keep buying her novels as I await it.

Although perhaps not the most brilliantly written novel the story at its heart is certainly pretty powerful. Read more
