5.0 out of 5 stars Britains answer to James Ellroy, 15 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This is a book about West London that's funny, gritty and realistic, even if most of the characters are over-the-top. Bobby Boy is a career criminal who's losing the plot. He finds himself up agaisnt Winston, a psychopath who is hunting down the mother who abandoned him in the 'swinging' sixties and he's got more than a kiss on his mind. Add in the widow of a minor rock star, a daughter who is looking for her sexual freedom after a long relationship ends and an alcoholic suit-wearer who is on the verge of hysteria for a life lost bin drudgery and you've got one hell of a ctacking story. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is the product of a public school eductaion. Stitch is a story of the streets, written by a man who's been there. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dialogue - Crime at its best, 2 Feb 2003
Stitch did it for me. Spencer writes with a hard-boiled, boiled down style that made this book unputdownable. It lacks cliches and relentless adjectives, instead delivering a fast-paced thriller with the best dialogue i've seen written in years. His other books are just as furious, gritty and real. More please.

1.0 out of 5 stars Major Disapointment, 1 Sep 2002
I have used Amazon to find the best in British Crime writing books for a number of years. Not all have been the best read I have ever had, but were acceptable. I am afraid to say however, that this book by John Spencer was by far and a way the worst I have ever purchased. Despite a number of attempts to get into the style of writing, I gave up about half way through when the feeling of frustration at the laziness and downright ridiculous prose used by Mr Spencer became too much. Perhaps you need to live in West London to appreciate the style of the author, but I can only recommend that other readers do not attempt to purchase a John Spencer novel without first borrowing a copy from a public library first, in order that they can at least try and understand the authors story telling manner.
