Author's reply to David Kirke's accusations, 2 Feb 1999

It is sad when former friends fall out, but I have to reply to the nonsense above from David Kirke, who accuses me of not being connected with the Club and of writing 400 lies. I was involved in the Club for many years, anyone doubting this can contact me for photographic evidence (or, better still, buy the book and see it there). As for the 400 lies, Mr Kirke has never been able to provide me with a list which I could refute, but rest assured that I have multiple witnesses, sources, and video/photographic evidence for all the stories in the book. My publisher is completely behind me (contact him, thedonotpress@zoo.co.uk) and he will confirm that the book has not been remaindered and is still available. I saw it in that Oxford bookshop last week - in the "Sports" section. Mr Kirke should stop knocking my book and get on with one of his own if he wants to tell the story another way. While insulting my publisher, he neglects to mention that he took an advance for a book ten years ago from another publisher, then failed to deliver a manuscript. It's harder than it looks, David, writing is difficult and you don't sound good rubbishing those who roll up their sleeves and do the work. Would-be readers will be delighted to know that my book is not filled with recrimination but dwells largely on the happier side of the events described. Martin Lyster

Poor version of recent history., 24 Nov 1998

The DSC has been persuaded to go in the internet to try and set the record a little straighter. There have been years of gossip and rumour about the club, often from people pretending to be part of the DSC. Sportsmen's curiosity may even have been drawn to this book claiming to be about the DSC on other pages on the web claiming a connection with the DSC that never existed, as if there wasn't enough chest thumping junk whizzing through the ether already. Alas its just one lie after another But some people out there will have paid good money for over 400 fictions in 164 pages .One of the largest Oxford bookshops stored it under fiction before dropping it and it has now been remaindered.Even the publisher was embarrassed when he learnt there were eight inventions in the fourteen lines devoted to the author's description of himself before the text even began. Extreme sport and adventure has always had its charlatans but we see no reason why people should pay to be be misled about the club that started all the things that gave so much fun to the world.David Kirke.

A work of sheer, heart wrenching genius, 12 Sep 2006
Lyster writes with a clarity and poise worthy of Shakespeare himself and is clearly a genius on a par with Napoleon, Da Vinci, Einstein, Nietszche, and certainly Ghandi. Mandela himself would have been proud of such an epic tale of monumental invention and heroism. This book has changed my life irrevocably, and | |
