I read this book and loved every minute of it. The plot kept me turning the pages and it's laugh out loud funny. Fitzroy Maclean Angel is one of the best creations in modern crime fiction - streetwise, funny and charismatic. Ripley's books are always worth reading, and this book lived up to all my expectations. Definitely worth a read!

...and this was meant to be the last ever book starring Fitzroy Maclean Angel. Regular readers of Ripley will notice a change in style - it has been written a lot more professionally making it more of a thumping read, typical, in fact, of a swansong.
Unfortunately, Ripley made Amy's character so charismatic and enigmatic that you can see why he had no choice but to go on to write Bootlegged Angel, Lights Camera Angel, Angel Underground and Angel on the Inside - the latter two in particular telling us more about Amy's past.

The story jumps about from past to present back to previous past to previous present....and so on...don't let that put you off, it has been brilliantly and Ripley's comic timing is spot on, as usual.

It didn't surprise me to read that Ripley was involved a few times in writing Lovejoy for the BBC - the similarities between the Lovejoy and Angel are obvious (except Angel's got a....er-hem...w word). So if you liked Lovejoy you will LOVE Angel.
