Product Description

Product Description

Millions of family pets as well as farm, wild and zoo animals that are often otherwise physically fit and healthy, are put to death every year to give human companions peace and rest from their incontinence, unruliness, excessive noisiness, aggression, possessiveness, destructiveness or other inconvenience. A behavior problem often becomes a 'terminal disease'. Indeed euthanasia for behavior problems is the main cause of death in young animals, and many people regard it as a treatment. The high cost of veterinary attention also results in many animals being discarded or neglected by their owners. The consequent price of animal suffering, and cost of human regrets and need for welfare services, are incalculable. They are also avoidable. Correcting the behavior problem often saves an animal's life as effectively as surgery or other medical procedures, and greatly reduces the suffering of all concerned. It does not require expensive behavior therapy or extensive behavior modification on the part of the owner. It can be brought about in many cases quite simply and inexpensively through the use of flower essences. This books offers descriptions of each of the 38 Bach Flower Remedies, and their application to the treatment of a range of domestic animals, including horses. It also describes diagnostic symptoms, animal by animal, together with appropriate treatment regimens, illustrated with case material obtained from veterinarians, animal behavior specialists and health practitioners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flower power for animals., 16 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Although I've used Bach Flower Remedies over many years, for family and animals, I found this paperback fascinating. The authors are well-qualified in the subject and present it in an interesting style, which makes for a good read, whether or not your interest is in a particular species of animal.

If flower remedies are new to you, then don't skip the introduction; it's not very long.

Part 1 details other types of flower remedy now available from different parts of the world, as well as Bach Remedies. This certainly brought me up to date. It also explains how flower essences can help animals (by altering an animal's state of mind, a change of behaviour will follow). There are references to researchers unknown to me, which seemed a little odd, but I eventually found them and their publications in a separate section towards the end of the book.

Part 11 is a directory, in alphabetical order, of the thirty eight usually available essences. This includes the conditions which need each remedy, and the behavioural indicators seen in a variety of domestic, wild and captive animals. This is the heart of the book, and perhaps I'm being too critical when I found myself irritated by the pictorial bullet points.

Part 111 gives help in choosing and using the correct remedy. I was very impressed by the section which aims to discover whether the owner/handler is part of the animal's problem.

The Appendix consists of a resource guide, the references mentioned above, a reading list and the excellent index. Here you may look up an animal by species or breed, a named condition or a named remedy.

I hope the off-white, textured pages prove to be more resilient than they look, because this is a book to which you will refer often.

Invaluable.
