Product Description

Ancient Egypt March/April 2001
...this book is stuffed with gems and anecdotes...the many characters invoked bring to life a period in recent history.

Many people have beeen accused of starting the second World War. I am among them and have letters to prove it. It all began with a radio broadcast which involved the Curse of Tutankhamun, the late King Farouk of Egypt and an over-zealous British Army musician...

4.0 out of 5 stars Living history of the Middle East, 19 Sep 2003
The author lived and worked as a radio broadcaster in the Middle East from the 1920s onwards. He organised the broadcast of Tutankhamun's war trumpets on the eve of World War 2, and interviewed the last surviving member of the team that discovered the tomb. He covered the Desert War in Egypt, then went to run the Egnlish-language radio station in Palestine, and was one of the last English officials to get out of Jerusalem as Israel was born.
He then travelled round Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Iraq, and tells many remarkable stories about the people of those countries, before the complexities of the modern word bought turmoil to the region.
This is a marvellous book, full of accounts of ways of life which have completely disappeared, such as the Marsh Arabs, destroyed by Saddam Hussein. To know how people in the Middle East had lived for centuries, read this.
