Gently humourous look behind the scenes at motoring history
Driving Down the Years was an immensely enjoyable project completed over the course of last Summer. Coming from a background as a motoring lawyer it was good to look behind the scenes to discover how many of our now familiar road traffic offences found their way on to the statute books. It traces the history of the British motor trade and the British obsession with motoring from the Austin 7 through to the Rover Freelander. It is gently amusing and at times pokes fun at the industry and its awful attempts at style (notably the 1970s). Latter chapters feature the rebirth of marques such as Jaguar and Aston Martin following the globalisation of the industry. Naturally, late 20th century technological advances mean that questions about the future of British motoring, often challenged by environmentalists, remain unanswered. But one thing is certain - after 75 years, the basic car concept and the freedom it offers has actually changed very little.
