Product Description

Ultra, Spring 1996, issue 4

Whereas John King's excellent Football Factory has found favour amongst the chattering classes, Casual is the choice of the streets . . .

From the Publisher

Low Life as an imprint has no literary pretentions. It only seeks to recreate the world of the throwaway paperback and to champion the best in British pulp fiction. Gavin Anderson's debut novel, Casual, follows in the footsteps of Richard Allen in the sex and violence stakes. It follows the fortunes of a gang of Chelsea casuals - hooligans who dress in expensive designer clothes - as they wreak havoc both at home and abroad.

5.0 out of 5 stars INTO PULP FICTION?? THEN READ THIS!, 13 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Ignore the American review below. Casuals in the mid 90's..I think not?? Only about a decade too late. Typical Americans..late as usual!! Also ignore the previous reviewers comparisons with Richard Allen..that does this book an injustice. The only similarity is the fact that the writing concentrates on youth culture, but this is far more action packed and enjoyable than Allen's clueless forays into 70's youth cults. Casual also steers clear of the unnecessary right wing slant which appears in Richard Allen's writing.

Casual is never a literary masterpiece, nor is it a serious account of terrace culture..it is just an enjoyable and easy read..

5.0 out of 5 stars SHARP EDGED PULP FICTION FROM THE DEAD END OF THE STREET, 23 Jun 2000
By A Customer
One word can describe this book...~MAD" From start to finish this is 200% action..I don't think I've ever read such a fast moving novel..Mayhem on every page.

It may not be a literary classic, but it is a first class read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Total Madness...a cracking read, 15 Dec 2000
By A Customer
You'll never have read a book like this before. It's all action. Not much plot but who cares when you get such an infectious story as this.

I think it's meant to be in the same vein as the Richard Allen books of the early 70s, and there are definitely similarities. However this is even faster moving and more violent than Allen's books.

If you want an accurate portrayal of football culture in a novel then read Awaydays by Kevin Sampson, or the Football Factory trilogy by John King. But if you want pure entertainment, read this. I've heard that the author has another book due out as a prequel to this, set during the Mod Revival. I can't wait.
