Product Description

Product Description
In the world of charter there is something for everyone. So in Part 1 the authors look at all the options: crewed charter, bareboat charter and flotilla sailing. They discuss types of boats, where to go and what to expect when you get there. In short, they′ll show you how to match your idea of a good holiday to one of the many on offer.

In Part 2 you′ll learn the skills that go to make a good skipper, plus everything an inexperienced crew needs to know. Soon, your teem will be able to approach a crowded jetty with confidence, clear a fouled anchor and reef under way.

Part 3 will keep you out of trouble. It details how to keep watch, navigate, master tidal waters and use the VHF radio. Plus how to cope with potential problems and emergencies afloat.

  • Choosing the perfect holiday
  • Planning your route
  • Handling the boat
  • Keeping out the trouble
  • Protecting your holiday

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but falls between two stools, 27 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Claire and Frank Wilson must be people who have done more sailing than writing, as this book contains a lot of padding to make up the 125 pages. This book wanders between light read and textbook. Maybe a symptom of having two authors. PART ONE - What is a charter? consists of 10% useful advice for those with no clue (like me) and 90% largely patronising waffle. e.g. "Many nationalities have tastes in foods that are peculiar to themselves. Even in areas that are used to catering for tourists you may not be able to get hold of all the items you require, so if there is something you cannot do without you may want to take it with you. English tea bags (larger and stronger than many other varieties) and Marmite are two examples." Well well. Later on we learn that soft collapsible bags are much easier to manage on a yacht than suitcases. We are also advised that "...travellers cheques are widely accepted. Find out which currency to take..." Thanks for those top sailing tips. Seriously, these things may be worth pointing out for those who really have no concept of sailing.. but...in PART TWO - Sailing as skipper or crew, pity anyone who has not spent a week under sail previously. Suddenly we are expected to know our luff from our leech. We are wisely advised.."when reefing the foresail, the fairleads must be moved forward accordingly". Hang on, we landlubbers are still cashing our travellers cheques! There's no glossary of sailing terms and only a few are defined in the body of the text, so when attempting the tricky yet vital task of lowering the mailsail, the advice "..first make sure there is sufficient tension on the topping lift to support the boom as the sail comes down" gets the 'Duh?' reaction from me. The book does get better in PART THREE with useful advice on mooring and safety, so unless you can find a better book on the subject you may as well buy it. But I just wish there was some sense of consistency.

4.0 out of 5 stars A practical 'revision' book before chartering, 10 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Covers all the main practical points of chartering including how to choose a suitable boat. Some of the early sections are a bit obvious, but the later ones covering boat handling, mooring, navigation, etc. were useful revision. Includes information on using a cruising chute, and what to do in emergencies such as dealing with fouled anchors and props. Probably best suited to skippers who have basic knowledge (eg: RYA day skipper level) but not a lot of previous experience. I also bought Rod Heikell's "Yacht Charter Handbook". The two compliment each other - Heikell does not give practical advice but has a comprehensive guide to the world's major charter areas.
