5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, 5 May 2006
By Mr. R. Lapthorn (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews

The Pevensey Island Guides are in a class of their own: small, attractive and beautifully illustrated guides to some of the nicest places in the British Isles. This one is no exception bringing to life the beauty of the Outer Hebrides in an exceptional way. I have yet to visit Barra and the Uists but this book has made the wish to do so keener than ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not updated, 15 Jun 2009
By Mr. R. W. Mansell - See all my reviews

While I agree with the previous reviewer concerning the general quality of this guide. I was disappointed to find that the book had been reprinted without any attempt to check whether the information was still relevant.

On the very first page of text the information regarding Eriskay, is shown to be out of date. On the following page is an out of date map, depicting Eriskay being bypassed by ferry from Barra and having no road connection to South Uist.

Ferries run from Barra to Eriskay and furthermore a road connecting Eriskay to South Uist was officially opened in 2002. Since that date there have been four reprints op this book all, presumably, having the same errors.

While the book is very interesting and informative, when one knows there is an error in one part, one wonders how much else is out of date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Uists and Barra, 24 Aug 2009
By D. K. Uffindall (N Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This is a useful guide with plenty of photographs and easily digestible text giving information about Barra and the Uists in the Outer Hebrides. The photographs are it's strength. Plentiful and colourful they serve as an antidote to inclement weather, allowing the visitor to appreciate what the area can look like if mists and rain prevent an instant, real time appreciation! The history of the islands is set out in an easily readable form and pre-visit reading will help the visitor to better understand the area, its culture and its people. Unfortunately this book has not been updated for some time so local information within it should be treated with caution. It predates the uniting of Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist and Berneray by causeways and it makes no mention of a stunning statue, Our Lady of the Isles, which occupies a commanding position on South Uist. Nevertheless it does remain one of the few useful books for the traveller to the Western Isles.
