Product Description

Synopsis

Weak willed and easily lead, Mrs Shufflewick was a red-nosed, drunken old cockney who liked nothing better than to prop up the bar of her local while sipping large gin and tonics, Guinness, port and lemon or anything else that came to hand. She would tell outrageous stories about her private life to anyone who cared to listen and invariably, at the end of a disastrously alcoholic evening, would end up stark naked - all but her hairnet - on top of a 29 bus.In real life, Mrs Shufflewick was the glorious creation of Rex Jameson, a music hall great and one of radio and TV's most original and brilliant comics. Shy, difficult, bisexual and alcoholic, his private and public life often reached spectacular highs and appalling lows. In this candid and incisive biography, Patrick Newley, who managed Jameson's later career, examines the life of the man who was lionised by comedians such as Bob Monkhouse, Barry Cryer, Danny La Rue and Barry Humphries. 'Rex was a comic genius,' said Roy Hudd. 'Even in his cups he was gloriously funny.' "The Amazing Mrs Shufflewick" pays tribute to Jameson's talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs Shufflewick, 19 May 2009
This review is from: The Amazing Mrs Shufflewick: The Life of Rex Jameson (Paperback)
This account of the life of Mrs Shufflewick's creator Rex Jameson is an absorbing read.
It perfectly captures the character of this eccentric and talented man wading his way through the seedy underbelly of London showbiz life in and around the 1950s. Missing though is an insight into Rex's creative approach to Mrs Shufflewick's ironic patter, perhaps he kept it to himself. Ah well; enjoy the routines printed in this book and to be sure, you'll wish there were more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A drop o' the hard Shuff, 17 Nov 2009

I was amazed when I came across this little book on Amazon, as I didn't know of its existence. I knew Rex Jameson - known to us all as 'Shuff' - from the theatre, and saw him perform many times, and a wickedly funny fellow he was. Unlike most drag acts, his origins were in music hall, and his 'drag persona' was an extremely subversive and hilarious character. And Shuff was much like that offstage also. Great to have this beautiful little volume as a memento of a truly unforgettable eccentric. Shuff is commemorated also, by the way, at one of his regular venues, the Black Cap pub in London's Camden Town, where there's a Shufflewick Room dedicated to him, and dominated by a large oil painting of him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pint Sized Appreciation, 1 Dec 2009

This review is from: The Amazing Mrs Shufflewick: The Life of Rex Jameson (Paperback)
This is a great little book about a great little star. One of those bittersweet elegies that can't help but make you wonder ... 'what might have happened...' If only booze and a less than elightened view of sexuality hadn't blighted his life, Rex Jameson might be a household name nowadays rather than a fondly remembered, but ultimately tatty drag act.

The book is short, sweet and very affectionate painting a picture of a world - not long - but gone by.
