5.0 out of 5 stars India By Rail by Royston Ellis, 14 Jul 2002
By Chrispen (London) - See all my reviews
For anyone contemplating a train journey in India, this is the book to read. It captures the atmosphere of train travel, as well as giving valuable practical information and advice. It was a great help to me on my travels throughout India. Without it,I probably wouldn't have even tried a train and I would have missed so much. With it, I travelled well and inexpensively and had a great time, both on and off the rails. It's a great book for an adventurous holiday you can do by yourself and never feel lonely with Royston Ellis's book as your companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to rail enthusiasts visiting India, 12 Aug 2000
By A Customer
"India by Rail" by Royston Ellis is probably the only wortwhile book aimed at rail enthusiasts visiting India. Even Indian rail fans would find it useful. It contains a host of practical tips on train travel in India, which can be quite exasperating if you aren't familiar with the intricacies of the system. There are a few minor errors. One might argue with the author's view that all rail authorities in India are very helpful; most experienced Indian travellers would not agree with this. However, it is still an indispensible guide for any one planning to travel by train in India.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible if you want to travel by rail in India, 30 Nov 2006

If you are going to visit India and are planning to get on a train there -and it is the only way to travel in India - buy this book! I spent 5 months travelling round on the railways in every class and the book was absolutely invaluable. When I was sitting around Delhi Railway station(hell on earth!) waiting for a connection waiting to kill some time I even bumped inti the famous Dr Dandapani, who 5 months previously had sold me the indrail pass in Wembley. The hints on retiring rooms are excellent. An invaluable book.
