But Marguerite the Bright One, Oak the Cautious, Tamarisk the Tactless and the other Reds have their own resources. Marguerite finds that shtoo can aquire mastery over numbers... and over the mysterious Woodstock. 4.0 out of 5 stars A new view of nature, 25 Nov 2005
What I like most about this book, is probably the way the author mentions quite a lot about the mysteries of nature and making them more vivid and true to us. Leylines are mentioned quite a lot, about the way squirrels can feel and follow them through their whiskers, and Stone force which is used by the Grey squirrels to 'protect' them from dangers like disease and their enemies. Although we do find out that the bigger the circle of stones the bigger the power and if you're standing right in the centre, where the power is strongest, you could most likely drop dead or fall unconscious at the least.
Mentioning things like this, in the Woodstock Saga, makes it sound like fantasy mingled in with nature.
I also like the way Marguerite the Bright One learns numbers by herself and the way Burdock the Tagger gives every Red squirrel, at a certain age, a tag to describe their personality or 'rank'.
The one little thing that keeps annoying me is the accent to Ourland Reds have been given. Every 's' sound is prunounced like 'z' which I found quite irritating.
A short and sweet read about squirrels, who are fascinated by the Earth's forces, have their home overrun by The Silver tide, the Greys, and are forced to travel across the sea toward Brownsea island. Very well-written with some good ideas included in the story. I can't wait to read The Second Wave.
