This text is intended for all in central Scotland, residents and visitors alike, who wish to know something of the natural and man-made history of the area. It covers from Balmaha on Loch Lomond in the west, to Blacknes on the Forth estuary in the east; from Tyndrum in the north down to Slamannan in the south - an area which is at the heart, yet combines features, of all Scotland. It will provide a current overview of the natural setting of the area, showing how the ancient framework of the rocks has been moulded by successive ice ages to form the scenery that we see today. Within this natural setting the climate and the soils have provided a base for vegetation ranging from mountain-loving plants in the west of the area, down to the salt marshes of the Forth in the east. Dependent on these plants is a variety of animal lifee, including insects, birds and mammals. The book aims to give an authoritative and comprehensive record of the natural life of central Scotland. Onto this natural setting man appeared some 6000 years ago. Since then he has changed the environment in many ways. The book records the history of agriculture, mining, manufacturing and trade in the area, the consequential growth of the population in several locations; the rise of politics, education and society; and developments in sport, recreation and tourism. It is hoped that the book wwill stimulate the reader to learn more about this area at the heart of Scotland. For schools and colleges, the book should be a useful record of life in the 1990s, and a source of information about how and why central Scotland looks as it does today.
