4.0 out of 5 stars The dividing line, 12 Dec 2005

This review is from: Counterparts (Paperback)
Counterparts is a beguiling novel that examines the intertwined lives of tightrope-walker Gargan and actor Adam, as disturbing nightmares bleed into reality and the nature of the pair's identity comes into question - are they really two separate people or the same man, and if so what is the terrible secret that has fractured their personality? Covering similar ground to the intense dual relationships in the likes of Cronenberg's Dead Ringers and much of the work of Christopher Priest, Counterparts is ostensibly a horror novel (and with Gargan's involuntary night-time genital self-mutilation there's enough gruesome material to make every male reader wince) although of a very cerebral type. Occasionally the European travelogue sections can get a little wearying, but with its strong characterisation, dreamlike ambiguity, and strong use of symbolism (the central characters split personality mirrored in the dividing line of Gargan's tightrope, ritual self-mutilation and ultimately the Berlin wall) Counterparts is a very strong debut, and an excellent modern horror novel. Recommended.
