Whiting has done a magnificent job with his interpretation of the "How to playboat" genre. The book manages to explain the aspects of playboating which in retrospect the advanced kayaker will know instinctively, however for the beginner or intermediate kayaker this book is gold.

The book starts off with a basic introduction to boats and what you should be looking for in a boat. The second segment is on reading a river, and although very limited in scope, it makes the essential points in a succinct manner.

The main part of the book covers the various techniques, covering everything from surfing to flatwater cartwheels. What really sets this book apart from all other books in this genre is the ability of Whiting to reduce the aspects of each move/action to logical and repeatable segments. The book has ample photographs to show the various moves, and the reader can also obtain the video that accompanies the book (sold seperately).

The only criticism that can be raised at the book is the print quality which results in very dark and intelligible pictures. This problem however lies with the publisher and not the author.

Get the book and get wet!
